Job Summary

To support the undergraduate advising of Psychology majors by working with them from prospective status through matriculation, course progression and graduation with priority emphasis their academic and personal success.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

  • Advise students individually and in groups to include prospective students seeking an undergraduate degree (B.A., B.S.) from the Department of Psychology and Counseling. 
  • Advise transfer students. 
  • Maintain familiarity with Psychology undergraduate programs and have ability to provide accurate information to current and prospective students. 
  • Evaluate prior coursework for transfer credit. 
  • Prepare initial degree plans and explain them to prospective or entering students, assist with initial scheduling and course enrollment approvals. 
  • Represent the Department of Psychology and Counseling at recruitment and outreach functions which may include presentations, booths and other events for community college and high school students and advisors. 
  • Present information on degree programs and college policies at open houses and orientations. 
  • Document approved course substitutions and updating of student advisement reports, processing of graduation applications as needed. 
  • Assist with petitions for re-enrollment after probation. 
  • Train faculty, administrative staff and student workers on advising procedures and policies as needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience for Advisor I

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field. 
  • One (1) year of experience in academic advising or related field. 
  • May accept a combination of education and experience.

Required Education/Experience for Advisor II

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology or related field. 
  • Two (2) years of experience in academic advising or related field. 
  • May accept a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education/Experience 

  • Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, or a related field. 
  • Three (3) years of experience working with college students and/or adolescents in an academic or counseling capacity.

Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

  • Knowledge about Psychology programs and careers in psychology. 
  • Interpersonal communication and relationship skills to work effectively with a broad range of students with varying backgrounds, cultures, capabilities, and needs. 
  • Strong computer/technical skills include MS Office programs, People Soft, Image Now and EAB. 
  • Self-motivated, requires little supervision. 
  • Should be punctual, professional, and straightforward but supportive and diplomatic in dealing with students, parents, faculty, and administrators in a culturally diverse setting.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
